CDN Nancy Lorraine, La Manufacture

France / Nancy

Théâtre de la Manufacture is one of the 35 French national drama centres (CDN). In France, CDN is a title awarded to a theatrical institution, which is closely related to the notion of public theatre. The Director of a CDN is nominated by the Minister of Culture and Communication.

Since January 2021 the Théâtre de la Manufacture has been led by actress and Director Julia Vidit. She is the founder of renowned company Java Verité, which explores theatre as a ‘game of conscience’. Her vision for la Manufacture is in part to reverse the normal direction of creation, by having authors create work in rural areas which will later be presented at the theatre.

The productions of the Théâtre de la Manufacture focus on contemporary texts, as well as repertoire plays. Its creations are presented in Nancy, as well as on regional, national and international tours. The Théâtre de la Manufacture also collaborates with other theatres to co-produce performances.

Théâtre de la Manufacture joined the European Theatre Convention in 2013 and hosted the ETC International Theatre Conference and General Assembly in 2016. From 2016-2018 the theatre formed part of the "European Theatre Lab: Drama goes digital" project and presented Stage Your City, a co-production by Théâtre de la Manufacture Nancy (France), Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe (Germany) and Kote Marjanishvilli State Theatre Tbilisi (Georgia).
